Bay Area Cabaret producer Marilyn Levinson will present Romanza, three young Canadian tenors making their Bay Area debut with their style of Popera, contemporary opera performance akin to Il Divo and Andrea Bocelli. The coup she has managed is to get the Fairmont Hotel, celebrating its centennial this year, to re-open the historic Venetian Room for one night only, on Saturday, April 28, to revive their famous "supper club" evening.
During its reign as the West Coast's premier supper club from 1947-89, the Venetian Room featured legendary performers such as Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles , Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, Marlene Dietrich, Lena Horne , Ella Fitzgerald , and Tina Turner . It was on the Venetian Room stage in 1962 that Tony Bennett first sang "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."
Added to the evening's festivities is a rare Bay Area appearance by former SF (now NYC) supper-club mainstay Peter Mintun (L'Etoile, Bemelman's Bar at The Carlyle), who will open the evening with his brand of sophisticated piano stylings. The event begins on April 28 at 7 p.m., with a champagne reception and three-course dinner paired with California wines for $140 per person. Reservations, call the Fairmont at (415) 772-5204, or online at www.bayareacabaret.org.
